Saying that one health insurance plan will work for everyone is the same concept as one size fits all clothing items. It doesn’t exactly fit the way the item would if it were the exact size of the individual- which can leave them questioning if the purchase was the right choice. Don’t purchase a one size fits all insurance plan- find the best international travel insurance for you:
Location: Your country of citizenship and where you need coverage will help dictate if you are eligible for a specific plan. But looking beyond eligibility, look at what you need for international travel. Do you need to show proof of coverage for a visa, job or school? If so, nail down what those requirements are and find a plan that includes what you need.
Cost: Of course everyone wants to save as much money as possible which might make you think the plan with the cheapest premium is best. Even if you are on a budget, it’s not wise to jump into the purchase of the first economically priced plan that you find. Typically plans with a low premium will result in you paying more out of pocket when you use the plan. Find out what the co-insurance, copay and deductible are and make sure that it’s a reasonable fee in the event that you would have to visit the doctor or hospital.
Exclusions: It’s good to look at the benefits of the plan and see what you will have coverage for, but keep in mind that every plan will have exclusions- things that aren’t covered as well. Make sure that a key benefit you thought would be covered is not on this exclusions list.
Time period: The plans under consideration will have a minimum and maximum period that you are able to have the plan for. If you need coverage for a short trip, make sure it’s not an annual plan. If you will need coverage for a few years, ensure that there is not a one or two year cap.
Age: Along with age comes wisdom, but unfortunately it also sometimes comes with a decrease in health insurance benefits. When searching for the best international travel insurance for you, make sure there is not a decrease in benefits for those in your age bracket. Typically this decrease will apply to those aged 60 and over.
