Each month the US Department of State continuously releases travel warning and alerts for countries around the world. Although these warnings have been created by the US government and speak directly to US citizens- they are helpful resources for anyone traveling abroad as they raise light to current conditions. If you haven’t been able to catch the news lately to keep up on your world events make sure you review the travel warnings and alerts before you take your trip abroad.
Cameroon Travel Warning, August 6: Due to threats of kidnapping and other armed attacks in the Far North region, travel to Cameroon should be avoided.
Liberia Travel Warning, August 7: All non-essential travel to Liberia should be avoided at this time. In May 2014 the Ebola Virus Disease was confirmed in Liberia and therefore poses a health threat to those within this country.
Nigeria Travel Warning, August 8: In May 2013 the Government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria proclaimed an emergency state for Adamawa, Borno, and Yobe. Because of this, there are still risks involved with travel to these states. Travel to Nigeria should be avoided if possible.
Pakistan Travel Warning, August 8: This travel warning replaces the February 2014 and serves as a reminder that travel to Pakistan still poses security threats and should still be deferred at this time.
Saudi Arabia Travel Warning, August 8: Due to recent attacks by members of Al-Qaida travel to Saudi Arabia should be taken with caution.
Iraq Travel Warning, August 10: Warnings to avoid “all but essential travel to Iraq” remains in place. Kidnappings and terrorist violence toward US citizens is still a security threat within Iraq- additionally, the embassy has limited ability to assist in any difficult situations that may arise.
Algeria Travel Warning, August 13: Due to a high threat of terrorist within Algeria travelers are advised to be aware of the risks accompanied by travel to this country. Although major cities are heavily policed there are still potential dangers including bombings, false roadblocks, kidnappings, and ambushes.
Sierra Leone Travel Warning, August 14: All non-essential travel to this country should be avoided due to the Ebola outbreak.
Mexico Travel Warning, August 15: Due to organized criminal groups within Mexico, all travelers to this country should be aware of the associated risks. US citizens are at risk of being the target of kidnappings, carjacking, and robbery while in certain states within Mexico.
Lebanon Travel Warning, August 15: The risk of injury and death is very high within Lebanon and travel to this country should be avoided. Terrorist attack bombings that occur in Lebanon have in nearly all cases resulted in death or injury to those in the nearby area as well as the targeted location.
Ebola Alert, August 28: In light of the Ebola Virus Disease outbreak in West Africa travelers to this area should be aware of the risks involved with becoming infected with Ebola. Those traveling to West Africa should expect to experience reduced aviation transportation, travel restrictions, and screening procedures.
Ukraine Travel Warning, August 29: Travel to Ukraine should be deferred due to ongoing violence with Russia.
