New Fee Schedule in the United States

Wednesday, June 30th, 2010

The United States Consulate will have a new fee schedule that will take effect on July 13, 2010 for immigrant visas. These changes come shortly after the non-immigrant visa fees increased on June 4, 2010.

These new few schedules for the US Consulates are intended to cover operating expenses for overseas consulates and passport agencies. Twenty-seven of the fees have been adjusted, including for passports, immigrant visas, and consular services.

Under the current scheme, the fees were unable to cover the costs for operations in the United States and abroad, especially with the new security enhancements. As a result, the Department of State has phased in new fees associated with visa processing and services.

As of June 4, 2010, all visas that are not petition-based (i.e., B1/B2, F, M and J visas) will pay a fee of $140 and those visas that are petition-based (i.e., H, L, O, P, Q, and R) will pay a fee of $150. The application fee for K visas for fiancé of U.S. citizens will be $350 and E visas for treaty-traders and treaty-investors will be $390 for example. For further information of the fee schedule enacted on July 13, 2010, the Department of State has made a list available for review.

Oil Spill Insurance

Wednesday, June 23rd, 2010

The oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico has created travel uncertainty from the planned beach vacation to the upcoming cruise. Although there has not been a canceled cruise as a result of the oil spill, we are still unsure how this may affect your upcoming vacation. If you are concerned about your non-refundable plane or cruise ticket or even your pre-booked excursions, it is important to look into travelers insurance as many plans do not cover cancellation resulting from the oil spill.

Although some plans cover natural disasters like hurricanes or volcanoes, the oil spill is instead considered a man-made disaster and in many cases is not covered. There have been reports where passengers have tried to cancel their airline tickets and were unable to obtain a refund on their insured flight. Many airlines have announced that the oil spill does not prevent incoming and outgoing flights and thus passengers will not be able to claim a refund – leaving passengers to assume both the non-refundable cost and rebooking fees.

If this is a concern for you, we here at International Citizens recommend purchasing a trip cancellation plan with the option to cancel for any reason. Our RoundTrip Choice plan is well designed as an oil spill insurance that will allow you to add the option to cancel for any reason as long as your initial deposit was secured within 10 days of purchasing the plan. This will allow you to cancel as a result of the oil spill and you will be able to retrieve 75% of your non-refundable costs.

If you have additional questions about this coverage, please feel free to contact us for further information about how to protect your upcoming trip.

Travel to the United Arab Emirates

Tuesday, June 15th, 2010

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has been a popular tourist destination, well-known for its extravagance and resorts. Recently, traveling has become much easier as websites are popping up with visa services right online. Currently, there are 33 countries that have an agreement whereby visitors can receive their visas on their arrival to the UAE:

• Australia • Andorra • Austria • Brunei • Belgium • Canada • Denmark • Finland • France • Germany • Greece • Hong Kong • Iceland • Ireland • Italy • Japan • Liechtenstein • Luxembourg • Malaysia • Monaco • Netherlands • New Zealand • Norway • Portugal • San Marino • Singapore • South Korea • Spain • Sweden • Switzerland • United Kingdom • United States of America • The Vatican

For the rest, the United Arab Emirates requires visitors to apply for their visa prior to arriving in the country. With corporate travel down by almost 50% last year and with the move to have more visitors schedule a layover visit, new inventive ways have been created to make the visa process easier.

Now, there are two online visa services available through the Emirates Airlines and Etihad Airways:

-Emirates Airlines offer the online visa application for travelers both the 96-hour visa 30-day visa. After applying, visas will be sent electronically within four business days and passengers will be able to follow the application status online.

-Etihad Airways will offer online visas for 90 days, tourist visa for 30 days, entry permit for 14 days as well as transit visa for 96 hours. Like Emirates Airlines, you will be able to apply and submit all required documents online. Additionally, you will also be able to track your visa status online which usually takes five to seven business days.

These services are expected to increase travel to the United Arab Emirates as processing is now easier and more convenient. As these services become more widely used, the online visa services are anticipated to expand into other visa offerings as well.
